What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a kind of virus/malware that encrypts your files or locks down your computer until you pay a ransom.

Your files are locked or encrypted by ransomware, making it impossible for you to use or access them. As a result your electronic devices may even cease functioning occasionally.

Ransomware can infect a device the same way other viruses/malware may infiltrate your devices.

For example:

  • By visiting questionable or unsafe websites
  • By opening emails, links, or files from unidentified sources
  • By having inadequate security on your devices or network (including servers)

Why do attackers use Ransomware?

Money

Small businesses can be particularly vulnerable in these cases, as they are less likely to adopt cyber security measures that may help prevent and recover from ransomware.

Who are usually the targets?

Small, medium, and large enterprises

Small organizations frequently have lower levels of security awareness, and are less likely to adopt cyber security measures, and spend less or nothing on such measures.

How to stay safe from Ransomware

  • Make regular backups of your critical data.
  • Update your operating systems, programs, and applications periodically
  • Use multi-factor authentication wherever possible.
  • Audit and protect your network’s services accessible over the internet, including any servers you may have (Remote Desktop, File Shares, Webmail).

Never Pay a Ransom. Always contact law enforcement in the event of a ransomware attack

Restoration of a victim’s files is not guaranteed by paying a ransom, nor does it stop any stolen material from being published or sold for use in subsequent crimes. It also makes a victim more likely to become a target again.
